The decision

The circumcision decision belongs to you

Parents are entitled to medically accurate, unbiased information about circumcision. Christina won’t recommend it and won’t talk you out of it. Here’s how she suggests thinking it through.

Where Christina stands

Neutral, on purpose

Christina is neutral on circumcision. She believes that you, as parents, are the decision makers for your child, and that you have your son’s best interest at heart. Her role starts once you’ve made the decision to proceed with scheduling.

Things to weigh

Six things Christina suggests considering

None of these have a single right answer. Together they cover what most families talk through before deciding.

01

How the foreskin functions

The foreskin has biological and sexual functions. Understanding them is part of an informed choice, so ask your pediatrician or midwife to walk you through them.

02

Potential health benefits

Removing the foreskin may carry some health benefits. Ask your provider which ones apply to your son and how strong the evidence behind them is.

03

The surgical risk

Like any procedure, circumcision carries risk. Consider how that risk changes on older boys and men. Conversely, leaving your son intact also has risks throughout his lifetime.

04

Timing, cost and healing

The complexity, cost and healing time change with age. Christina sees newborns up to one month old, so ask your pediatrician how things would differ if it were done later.

05

Culture and faith

For many families, cultural or religious practice is part of the decision. If eighth-day timing matters to you, Christina is happy to accommodate it, even on short notice.

06

Your son’s rights and your role

Some parents weigh their son’s right to decide for himself alongside their authority as his parents. There’s no single right answer, and Christina respects whatever you decide.
